Lesson 1 - Career Interest Surveys

Lesson Objective:
Familiarize students with career interest surveys, and the benefits of completing them. Introduce the word processor, and have students create and format a one page unbound report.

"Find a job you like, and you will never work again!"

What does that quote mean?

To begin this unit you will conduct a variety of self test, or career interest surveys in order to determine what types of jobs you would be best suited for.

For each of these surveys, copy and paste your results into a word document, and save it for future reference.  You may be asked for certain assignments to be submitted as part of your Work Packet.

Note* - Due to the volatile nature of the Internet, teachers should test each of the recommended links before doing this activity. There are numerous other Interest Surveys available online, should links on this page be unavailable.


Go to the Career Center and the click on take the Personality Test.

Before you take the test, read about the test by clicking on "The Holland Personality Types."

  • Complete the CareerKey Test.

  • Once you get your results copy and paste them into a word processing document for future reference.

Birkman Method Career Style Summary: The purpose of this questionnaire is to help guide you to careers that would be of the most interest to you. After reading some background information, complete 24 questions that will be analyzed to determine your most likely interests and work style. This information can help you choose fields, jobs, and organizations that are suited to your strengths and occupational preferences. Answer the questions, obtain your analysis copy and save the data from the page that explains your color choices and what they represent.


Work through the questionnaire on this site. This should give a you a list of skills that will better allow you to look for a career. Cut, paste and save this information for future use! If you don't you may be doing it again.

Career Key: Answer the questions about: Which jobs interest you, what you like to do, your abilities, how you see yourself, and create your Career Key. Identify groups of jobs that are likely fit you.


Consider the results from all of the tests that you have taken. What kind of a person are you? Using the information form the surveys key in a word processing document which explains the following:

  • What are your interests based on the results of your tests?
  • What are three careers that would be suitable for you based on your results?. Describe each of these careers in your own words.
  • Do the results and the suggested careers fit with your actual career plans? Why or why not?
  • What did you learn about yourself through doing these surveys?
  • Your paper should be one page in length and answer each of the questions above.
  • Make sure that your copy is free of errors!
